چکیده

I give an overview of the rich phenomenology of dwarf nova oscillations (DNOs) and Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) observed in cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). The favoured interpretation of these rapid brightness modulations (3 – >1000 s time scales) is that they are magnetic in nature – magnetically channelled accretion from the inner accretion disc for DNOs and possible magnetically excited travelling waves in the disc for QPOs. There is increasing evidence for the magnetic aspects, which extend to lower fields the well known properties of strong field (polars) and intermediate strength field (intermediate polars) CVs . The result is that almost all CVs show the presence of magnetic fields on their white dwarf primaries – though for many the intrinsic field may be locally enhanced by the accretion process itself. There are many parallel behaviours with the QPOs seen in X-Ray binaries, with high and low frequency X-Ray QPOs resembling respectively the DNOs and QPOs in CVs. Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables, and a Comparison with X-Ray Binaries

We compare some of the properties of rapid oscillations in cataclysmic variables and X-Ray binaries. In addition to the earlier recognition that both types possess the same correlation between high and low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations, we have now found that the dwarf nova VW Hyi in its late stages of outburst shows the 1:2:3 oscillation harmonics that are seen in some neutron star and...

Dwarf nova oscillations and quasi-periodic oscillations in cataclysmic variables – V. Results from an extensive survey

We present observations of dwarf nova oscillations (DNOs), longer period dwarf nova oscillations (lpDNOs), and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 13 cataclysmic variable stars (CVs). In the six systems WW Cet, BP CrA, BR Lup, HP Nor, AG Hya, and V1193 Ori, rapid, quasi-coherent oscillations are detected for the first time. For the remainder of the systems discussed we have observed more clas...

EUVE Observations of Nonmagnetic Cataclysmic Variables

We summarize EUVE ’s contribution to the study of the boundary layer emission of high accretion-rate nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables, especially the dwarf novae SS Cyg, U Gem, VW Hyi, and OY Car in outburst. We discuss the optical and EUV light curves of dwarf nova outbursts, the quasi-coherent oscillations of the EUV flux of SS Cyg, the EUV spectra of dwarf novae, and the future of EUV obser...

Dwarf Nova Oscillations and Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables: I. Observations of VW Hyi

From archived and recent high speed photometry of VW Hyi we find Dwarf Nova Oscillations (DNOs) occasionally present throughout outburst, evolving from 14.06 s period at maximum to > 40 s near the end of outburst. A relatively slow increase of period is followed by rapid increase and subsequent decrease. Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) are seen at periods of hundreds of seconds. For the firs...

Dwarf Nova Oscillations and Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables: II. A Low Inertia Magnetic Accretor Model

The Dwarf Nova Oscillations observed in Cataclysmic Variable (CV) stars are interpreted in the context of a Low Inertia Accretor model, in which accretion on to an equatorial belt of the white dwarf primary causes the belt to vary its angular velocity. The rapid deceleration phase is attributed to propellering. Evidence that temporary expulsion rather than accretion of gas occurs during this ph...
